It is illegal to discriminate against a person on the basis of a disabling condition. People's ignorance about HIV, however, may get expressed as prejudice and employment discrimination. Fear and concern about possible discrimination or loss of benefits has caused some PLWH/As not to seek employment or to stay in their current job rather than disclose their HIV status in a new workplace.

There are federal and state laws that prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of disability. Understanding these laws can:
